His journey began at the Contra Costa Consolidated Fire Protection District, where he started as a volunteer reserve, immersing himself in the demanding yet rewarding world of emergency response. After completing his paramedic training in 1984, Gerald became an Emergency Paramedic with American Medical Response. His proficiency and dedication in this position led to a significant opportunity with the Fremont Fire Department in 1985, where he was part of the first-ever class of firefighters/paramedics. Additionally, Gerald was vital as a Division/Group Supervisor on a Type 3 Incident Management Team. In this capacity, he orchestrated responses to significant emergencies, including hurricanes and wildfires across the United States. His leadership during major disasters, such as the 1989 Oakland Firestorm and the 1991 Loma Prieta Earthquake, demonstrated his ability to handle complex, high-pressure situations with expertise and composure. Outside his professional commitments, Gerald is an avid outdoorsman passionate about maintaining an active lifestyle. He engages in hiking, mountain biking, and skiing—activities that keep him physically fit and mentally alert.
